  • Chris Pirillo talks about Twitter, RSS and Des Moines
    April 21st, 2008 / Posted by Nathan T. Wright

Internet entrepreneur, author and renowned geek Chris Pirillo was in Des Moines this weekend and we (the #dmtweetup crew) joined him for an impromptu TweetUp. I got a chance to interview Chris about how Twitter has replaced his RSS reading habits, and I asked him what Des Moines (and Iowa) can do to retain and attract creative talent.

More videos and photos of the event can be found on various Flickr photostreams.

Special thanks to Andy at East Village Books for donating the location space, free coffee and Wifi.

  1. Great interview! It is a tough truth that locality has a lot to do with a healthy creative class and it’s sad that Iowa can’t seem to get on top of it.

In High School in Waukee, Iowa, the only time I remember using the ICN was to watch the Macworld streaming video when Steve Jobs unveiled the iMac. That and maybe one classroom session that was hosted across town.

Here in Michigan, the FCC is funding a similar network. I’m sort of pessimistic now that it’s worth the effort unless they really push to educate people across the state about it.

One thing I have found to be valuable is the Lansing web design meetup, where the conversation occasionally drifts toward emerging technologies. It’s great to help open others up to this new world.

  2. Great interview! Thanks for posting it! :)

I posted a “behind-the-scenes” video of this interview here:

  3. I’m not sure if I saw a segment for the Daily Show or someone with a sensible series of statements delivered in a quirky style with ironic bookends to his rant. Wait, that is the Daily Show. ICN is the biggest kept secret of this state and it may be true that Iowans by and large don’t care the most amazing “wired” network is underneath their homes and highways. Certainly many of our schools, hospitals, and distance learning technology classrooms barely scratched the surface that has been available to them for nearly 20 years via the ICN. Privatize the ICN (even in part) doesn’t seem to be a reality so we look for free wireless in our neighborhoods from neighbors who don’t protect their routers that comes to them via cable companies and private telephone networks. Even some of us may do that to watch Battlestar Galactica from hulu.com on the weekends. I’m not naming names, I’m just saying that maybe some Iowans in small towns do that from time to time.

  4. Can I post this MP4 to my podcast feed?

  5. If twitter is good enough for Chris Pirillo then it’s good enough for me. Now I don’t have to learn RSS and still be on the cutting edge. Thanks twitter.

  6. As an import….after watching this, I think I’ll move:-)

  7. I was torn on the video. A semi-rebuttal:
