I've been reading about both and Gowalla seems to have an advantage in that it's GPS-based, meaning users have to prove that they're actually at (or at least in the vicinity of) the location they're attempting to check in at. It does have a downside in its lack of promoting "mayors" and the ease of creating new, arbitrary locations (ie "my bedroom"), but it looks like a solid competitor to me. Thoughts? Have you tried Gowalla?
