  • How we keep ourselves entertained on the road
    July 8th, 2009 / Posted by Nathan T. Wright

Today we drove to Sioux City for the fourth leg of our Summer 2009 Road Trip. A total of six hours in the car can really wear a person down, so here are a few things that we do to stay awake and focused. Yes, including a discussion about Iowa’s Loess Hills, which would put most people to sleep.

How do you stay alert during long road trips? Please leave your comments below.

The road trip has been great so far and we’ve met all sorts of interesting, curious and bright new people. We’re wrapping it all up this Friday in Iowa City – be sure to stop by if you’re in the area!

  1. Ahhh, Sioux City. I’ve driven there many, many…. many times to visit the grandparents. I feel you about the drive. It’s long. I stay away with good old fashioned Mt. Dew.

Did you know that the geological phenomenon that makes up the Loess Hills can only be found in two places on Earth? Western Iowa and someplace in China. It’s true.

  2. Thanks for the refresher on Loess deposits; formed by wind suspended silts that form deposits all over the world, http://www.physicalgeography.net/fundamentals/10ah.html

I sing, (loudly, and mostly badly), along with the radio to keep myself entertained on long road trips.

  3. First off let me say how much I love “The Office” and second let me say that anything beyond a 30 minute road trip can get old fast. Ashley, my wife and I play music really loud, usually stuff from the 80′s and attempt to sing along. We also make short funny stupid videos of each other doing nothing and then trying not to laugh about while we drive at 70 mph. Sometimes we make signs and hold in the window for other drivers to read. I won’t say what they read, but they are fun. Sometimes we get into really in depth conversations that last for hours. All of a sudden we have to take a drink stop and were are halfway there. Other then in depth conversation sometimes we talk about when we met and the funny stuff we used to get away with and the concerts we went to. Man, I must be getting old.

    1. “The Office” very good
    2. I have not heard anyone talk about the Loess Hills in like 15 years
    3. Road trips rock!
    4. Creepy dolls scare me a lot too!

    Great video, thanks for sharing!!

  4. My stand-by is a Dwight Schrute stressball head that helps keeps me awake.

  5. Lived in Sioux City for 13 years. Enjoyed it. I listen to books on tape when I make multi-hour road trips (like a magic 5-hour cruise to Chicago). That only works when you’re alone, though. If you’re with the kids they will strangle you with garrote wire as you drive if you make them listen to a book on tape during driving. Just a tip.
