Nathan, so true, yet so often forgotten. Thanks for reminding us to "be an adult." :-) I joke about that point, but sometimes it is easily forgotten and people don't think about the ramifications of their actions.

I'm only rude to the twitter robots. And even then, only if they follow me. I don't like it when the robots follow me.

Great post. I love the speed, reach and access to a larger numbers of opinions that online networks give us. But there's a difference between being honest and being rude. I have many times been guilty of the second. Having done that, I've also found unnecessary barriers put up just because I didn't stop and think. Being online doesn't mean we should stop being civil.

Hi Brett, thanks for commenting. To me, inappropriate is less about the content and opinions but more about the tone and frequency. A consistently negative tone builds up over time, and you'll see the occasional Twitter user who rips on businesses over and over again just to get noticed. I think that's fine once or twice (sometimes you gotta vent) but one shouldn't make a hobby of it.

Great article Nathan! A good reminder for all of us who are participating on a social media platform on a daily basis.
It seems as though many don't understand the permanency of things they post and how serious the consequences can be of the things they say.
Might be a great discussion for your classes when you start teaching! We have grown up spilling our guts online and maybe don't realize some things should be sensored and carefully planned. I've seen some brutal and rude awakenings!

Nice post Nate. One problem I see is that different people see Twitter quite differently. Some people think you should tweet like you are tweeting to a dignitary, others tweet honestly, but with no holds barred. Can you give some examples of appropriate and inappropriate Twitter criticism?
